'AMM' 200 1989

I am in need of some help. I purchased a used Air Mass Meter off of ebay. The seller assures me that it is in good working order, because it was purchased new right before the car was totaled. My AMM in my 240 is going bad, not completely kaput yet, it seems to be breaking down in stages. Last night I received the part from ebay and put it on, however after replacing my old AMM with the new one, the car would not stay running. It would start but that was all. I disconnected the electrical connector and started the car and it started. Seems to me that the new AMM is not working. I don't know if it makes a difference but my AMM ends with the #'s 016 and the one i purchased off of ebay ends with 017. Would that make it not function properly or is it just a bad part. I replaced the Amm with the old one and the car is running, but I know i need a new one.

Thanks!
