Speedometer shorting? 700 1991

The car blew its heater core (bad) last winter. I replaced that along with other coolant issues. Along that same time My mom (the driver) complained of lack of speedo and temp. Temp was easy fix with change of sender but speedo is beyond all comprehension. This '91 has no service manual so I am subscribed to a web-manual ALL-DATA. Its nice, but me being an automotive engineer, I need a little bit more info for issues. So here goes:
Symtoms are that neither needle or odo work when not functioning. For awhile, long trips seemed to sort things out and all worked again. But symtoms remained. It will either read 0, 46, or 69 steady, unless it feels like "dancing." It will bring itself in and out of commission at any given moment and who knows how long it lasts. I've tried to create a control environment to recreate the symtoms and have failed. Heat, cold, Left turns, etc., nothing seems to work. I have tested wiring and I found an open wire close to the sensor on the diff, but fixing that did not address anything. The sensor works as I put a frequency meter on it and got a response. Wires and grounds and connectors all get a good ohmmeter reading and continuity. My only question is I get close to 20K Ohm out of the B-W, GR-W combo going back to the sensor. I am left with two possibilities, the speedo is bad or there is another spot. On the wiring diagram, it shows a solder joint and a resistor. I have traced the wiring group all out except for this one section that seems to go behind the radio stack. As much as I like to work on this car, I'm not too excited about getting back behind there. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be more than appreciative. Thanks.
