Wits End on A/C 200 1987

All:

We successfully changed out the compressor in the 87 244 today. My father-in-law is flummoxed. The only thing he can think remains is that the evaporator is somehow blocked and air is not going through it, but around it. We do not seem to have any issues with air flow though. The accumulator, expansion valve, and now compressor have been changed. The system was vacuumed well for an hour, no leaks. The system took 3 1/2 cans of R134A. We had previously evacuated the remaining R12, safely of course. The system will now only drop to 66-68 degrees. Oh yeah, we also blew the lines out with an air compressor, and double checked the condensation line. Seemingly no problems. The pressures were 180 on the high side and 32 on the low. Based on our chart, the temperature at the vents should have been in the 40's. Not so. We could hardly get below 66°. We even changed out the thermostat on the dash. The other one felt a little loose. No major expense. My only expense has been parts. My father in law lives out of town, so it is not easy for him to come back and tinker with it. I plan to take it to my mechanic, but want to know what else one would suggest. I hate to spend hundreds more, but will do so in order to have AC. Help. My father in law is a repair guy and really likes to know what makes things work (or in this case, not work.)
