Clutch Adjustment Experts 200 1991

I have a 91 245 with a M47 trans and lets say my clutch was "dragging"...do I want to tighten the cable or lossen the cable? The manual calls for .12" play in the arm, seems difficult to measure, how critical is this adjustment/measurement??
