Stalling problem identified...maybe? 200 1990

I had written in on Friday about my 1990 240 DL's stalling problems. After checking the fuel pump relay, power stage, and 25 amp fuse I noticed something curious. I have no idea what the compartment is called - but I was smart enough to take a picture of it, (link below). It is the black compartment between the 25 amp fuse, silver square box and power stage. I lifted off the black cover of whatever-this-is-called and it was filled with clay bug colonies. I'm not sure what insect made these, but there were red clay tunnels all over the place. I cleaned it out well and then used some compressed air on it. The car cranked right up, but it's been cranking fine for the last couple of days. Now the question..is it possible that this could have contributed to my stalling problem?
