Overheating 700 1992

My 1992 745 overheated the other day. Pulled quickly over and lucky no damage. Sure enough the thermostat was broken, so I took it out, figuring that it would be ok to run it until I could get a replacement part. It just overheated again, now I am thinking something more serious. The hoses *look* ok, the upper is fine, maybe a collapsed lower hose?? When it happened the second time, boiling antifreeze surged through the overflow tank and blew the cover apart. I have an electric fan, and can hear and feel the fan cutting in and out, so I thin that that part is ok.

The thermo is marked 82 degrees. It is also date stamped 1998, so the previous owner may as well had some problem, but have no way of knowing.

Two questions:

Does anyone know if 82 degrees is the correct thermo? I have seen them marked for 87 and 91 as well?

Any thoughts as to what may be causing my woes? I think that afer I get this straightened out, I will try the idiot light solution for low coolant that is in the FAQ.

As always, thanks for all of the great help.
