Climate control puzzler 700 1991

Okay, I have a 1991 Volvo 740 station wagon with 275K...yes, I've been around :). A rather puzzling new problem has surfaced with the manual climate control (it doesn't have automatic). When going up hills or accelerating hard, air stops coming out of the face vents and instead only comes out on my feet, even though the air duct selector knob is set only to FACE. Furthermore, it seems like the fan blower motor slows down significantly, but it may just sound that way since it stops coming out on the face.

Could it be the alternator (still original)? But there are no other indications of a sick alternator--the lights don't dim at all on hills, and the car always starts normally. Any suggestions?
