1988 740 turbo cylinder head

I just dropped my cylinder head off at a local machine shop in Hopkins, MN. It had lost (due to bad head gasket) some of the metal between cylinders 1 and 2. The guy there said it was no big deal, that he could clean it up for about $100. I had left the tensioner attached and when he removed it he said it looked like a piece was missing that was causing the round spacer inside to mess up the stud. Is that normal?
