Intermittent Charging System Failure 200 1992

My charging system fails intermittently. It works fine when the car is first started cold. Then it comes & goes after 10 minutes or so. After 20 minutes of running, it is gone completely. This makes me think that temperature is a factor.

Also, my temp gauge and fuel gauge do not work--which I have heard can be due to a bad voltage regulator.

Is it the alternator? I personally suspect the voltage regulator, but I'm not sure. Does that comes off of the alternator, or if they must be bought as a unit?
