Electrical issue 140-160

I have a '67 140, which is probably the most reliable car I have ever owned. Last week though it died on me in rush hour traffic in the middle of the intersection. I had it towed to my mechanic who mostly works on Mopars. He determined it was the voltage regulator and replaced it but it immediately fried that. Thinking that it was a bad unit he put another one in and the same thing happened. Up until this time the car had been running great, the alternator light would come on every now and then, but nothing like this. Any ideas out there as to what may be the cause?
