I have a 1991 244 (5 speed) with an interesting vibration in the engine area. I originally thought it was heat shields vibrating, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. Here is the deal:
There is a horrible rattle/vibration at certain engine noise frequencies. It doesn't happen at any particular speed or in an particular gear, but it always happens at the same RPM frequency. For example, it will occur at some point in first gear and then disappears when the RPMs increase past that critical frequency. When I push in the clutch to shift to second, you slightly hear it again as the RPMs drop through that range. In second gear, the same thing happens. You reach a certain RPM, hear the sound, RPMS keep going up, and then it disappears. You hear it again when you shift to 3rd as the RPMS drop through the range. The same story for each gear. In 5th, the RPMs never reach the frequency of the vibration. The noise doesn't seem to be correlated with any sort of performance issue. Just plain annoying.
Any thoughts on where I start my diagnosis. I, along with my wife, would appreciate any help.
