O/D problem.... 200 1987

My brother has an '87 with an automatic transmission. It's been having a slight problem in that it won't go into overdrive. My brother turned it off manually (by pressing the button on the gear selector) for the sake of passing someone uphill and ever since it won't re-engage. The orange arrow remains lit in the instument cluster. It seems like the problem is the switch itself, because I had noticed previously while driving it that it would occasionally stick and if it were pressed a few times it would go, however could there be a problem with the transmission? Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks in advance

Peter
