AAARRRG! Still weird problems after (2nd) tranny removal 700

Recap.. Removed auto tranny on 1990 740 16v for main seal replacement.

1st time did not know about idexing flexplate to #1 TDC. (Thanks John S.)

This time, while trying to start have weird grinding noise, intermittently.

Sometimes no noise at all, and starts, sometimes just a click from the starter, (5 months old).

If car does start, it won't idle, unless I have removed TPS and AMM (3 months old) connectors.
Then will idle but not go past about 3k rpm.

If car does start with connections in place will run from 1k to about 3.5k rpm
and then cut out.

Whenever it starts, it does backfire, sporadically, not loud, out the tailpipe, but quiet, in intake apparently.

I have checked as best I can for any bad vacumn and wire connections, none obvious.

I've trying to think what I could have screwed up, but after working on it for about 10 straight hours, I can't think.

Hoping someone out there can....

P.S.John S. don't tell me I have to do this again!!
