Replaced steering rack Now uneven force? 200 1986

Bricksters,
On the weekend I put a second hand steering rack in the 245. The job went well to Bentley manual but the forces required (turning either way) fluctuates. I am hoping this is just residual air in the system. It was pretty bubly. I have not had a wheel alignment yet but will do so if this smooths out. Will this go away or is it a symptom of a bad replacement rack? Is there any other way to bleed except for turning the wheel a lot?
Thanks
Karl
