Another electrical freakout 140-160 1973

I must admit I don't know the intrnal workings of your French alternator, but I suspect it is similar to a Bosch alternator. If so the following information applies.

Make sure the battery warning light comes on when you first turn the key on. During startup, the warning lamp circuit provides current to the field winding of the alternator. This boot-straps the magnetic field so the alternator can produce charging current.
