Zee, I know exactly what you mean, I got the same problem trying to get my Mom's 91, 740 pedal firm. Not sure if it is because I remember a time when it was, or if I just know what a firm pedal is supposed to be like. I do know I am very unhappy with it. I noticed a Consumer Reports review I have on the 240's said stopping distances were greater than desired - ironic for cars that tout safety. They must mean when you get in a crash with a Volvo.
Anyway, it is causing me some close calls when I drive to close behind one of those Mitsubishi type, large diameter wheels/rotors, large caliper, lightweight, super quick stopping vehicles. Those newer designs stop those cars so darn fast it really is a problem for older cars that are too close behind them. I always have to stop almost by jamming the brake on really fast and hard, because of the pedal travel and the weight (I suppose). In fact, I was going to bring this topic up before and ask if anyone else had the same problem. I'm going like 30-40 mph and suddenly right after I see their brake lights start, next thing I know they are stopped a moment later. I'm not sure which is worse, that, or those drivers that signal a turn and then for some reason come to a full stop on the main road before they start turning - you should hear me cursing.
