What to do with out-of-car M46? 200

I have an M46 which was removed an '84 DL. I am considering installing it in an '80 DL.
Having looked at the OD section in the 700/900 FAQ's I am still uncertain what course of action to take.
Some background.
When I first owned the '84 OD would engage immediately. Over the course of five years and maybe 30,000 miles it gradually became sometimes reluctant to engage. It would hesitate for a few seconds to fifteen seconds but ultimately it would always get there. In either case it was always a smooth transition. I never experienced any strange noises or clunkiness other than the usual lag due to worn driveline componets and mounts/bushings. The only time I drove the car for a long distance on the highway OD would not engage at high speed. It did work at times on that trip but only after I had got off the freeway onto a secondary road and at lower 4th gear speeds, say 50-60 mph.
The OD indicator light always came on when engaged and went off when not.
I never noticed any ATF on the driveway. There may have been and I may have mistaken it for motor oil. But no serious leaks. The unit is pretty grimy, though. I have not checked the fluid level. Probably should have done so before writing this.
I'm not sure what else to say at this point except that according to the previous owners records this M46 was supposedly a replacement for the original one, the swap having been done by an AAMCO shop. It is supposed to have been new at that time. Or perhaps a rebuilt unit. But according to the work order this shop just did a straight replacement. Assuming it really was new and that the gearbox and overdrive were replaced as a unit then it will have seen about 75,000 of service by this point. Maybe more. Odometer problem, you know.
I would have been wise to do some in-car diagnosis before I removed the M46 but it is too late.
I like to believe that this is a reliable unit or would be with the proper repairs. If I should choose to use it what can I do before installation to try to ensure that it will operate normally?

BTW I have the driveshaft, center support, the relay and wiring although some of the latter should probably be replaced. Need to get the M46 mount is about all. Also, I forgot to get the speedo cable off of the car before getting rid of it. I believe that is longer on the OD cars, isn't it?
