Would like to know 'Should I engage in D position when catched in red traffic signal..?' 900

Confuse so much.....one suggest push in D position and feet on brake pedal.
Other one suggest engage in N is safer...
Would like to know what's going on with the engine and automatic transmession.
Transmission fluid will heat up...??? Eat more fuel when in D position..?
Which method is the correct action to prolong the car's componet life.?
