*.#@& Water pump leak. 700 1990

After successfully replacing the head on my 90 744ti I am having a difficult time getting the rear water pump o-ring to seal. I have pulled the pump and re-sealed but to no avail. It continues to drip from the rear o-ring. I have tried using silicone to create a better seal but also to no avail. I have also checked the FAQ.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
