Try lubing the tracks with WD40 or 3-36 spray, hold the top of the sunroof down as someone closes it, and look for trouble with the front edge weatherstripping folding up.
The problem is too much resistance to movement- you might be able to just pull it closed as you operate the motor.
When you get it most of the way closed, you can pull off the interior panel of it and possibly see the problem area inside.
