Engine Mounts 700 1989

Looking at my engine mounts today and it sure seems like I read somewhere (in this forum?) that one way to tell if your engine mounts need replacing was to see how close the oil filter is to the mount or crossmember. Looking at mine the bracket from the engine mount to the block runs under the oil filter so it doesn't seem like the compression on the mount would affect this clearance. Was I dreaming this (or maybe one of those flashbacks they warned me about during my younger and dumber days?) What's a good way other than the obvious, torn or broken, to tell if the mounts need replacing?
Thanks
