What down pipe? I don't think I ever had a B18 or B20 with a down pipe
on the driver's side. (I've had a bunch of them.)

You are probably right about the valve stem seals. To me the ones for the
B18 are more cosmetic than functional. B20 has more effective ones
but if your valve guides are worn you'll get blue smoke on hard deceleration
and a big puff of it when you step on the gas. This won't affect compression.
