Compressor Replacement - Help me decide!!!! 900 1992

I have read and re-read the FAQ on A/C compressor replacement and the R134 retrofit and am siezed with fear, uncertainty and doubt. Please help me decide which is greater, my distate for paying the mechanic his estimated $800 or my fear of getting into something I know little about - trying to do it myself. This is my 50 plus mile per day commuter car of which I am rather fond and runs great at 187K. Any opinions on used compressors? Any good sources for new compressors or R134 Retrofit Kits?
