Can you use something besides r-12 to top off/charge system ? 700

I need some help !
I have a 91 740 wagon that needs to be charged. It cools somewhat but, I think it is low on freon. Has anyone had experance with these products that claim you can top off your r-12 system without conversion ? Freeze, envro-safe are a couple I have seen. Thanks for any imput
