Chrome body moulding 1983 GL slips 200

OUr 1983 GL Sedan has chrome body moulding strips near each window that slip around (front to back). The pieces are about 1/4 inch wide and clip onto (or slide onto) plastic clips that fit into another piece of trim. This is different from the way the chrome trim on DL's of the same vintage fits in. They are held in place by small plastic clips. I intend to replace the various failed clips; is there a way to prevent the chrome from slipping on the clips once I have reinstalled the chrome strips?
