HELP! Instrument Cluster Problems - ' 200 1988

Speedo vs Odo. The electric device that converts pulses from the rear axle rotation into speed reading also drives a little motor thing that drives the odometer.

In the drive train to the odometer is a plastic gear that gets brittle and fails. My 1986 failed in April 1998 at 184995 miles. My 1988 failed in Dec 2000 at 110250 miles. A great many brick boarders have had similar experiences.

The repair is either a $25 PITA DIY, or $150 or so at a shop. You can buy the gear and put it in, or send the cluster to a repair shop. There is a place in Austin, TX that prices the repair around $150, the VDO shop in Houston wants $200+, and there are surely others about the country.

So there you have it, a dilemma.

Good Luck,

Bob
