'93 940 dies-Is it the pre-pump? 900

Yesterday, about 30 miles from home my na '93 940 died on the road. It was 100 degrees F. and we had 4 adults in the car with the a/c on. Fuel gauge read above empty, but we walked to a farm house, owner took us to town with fuel can and brought back 2.5 gal fuel to add to the tank. This took about 30 minutes. Then the car started and ran fine. I thought then it was the "hole in the hose" thing, but when we headed back home 3 hours later, we got within .5 mile of my house and the car died again. This time it had a nearly full tank of fuel. I don't think it was an ignition distrubutor problem, bacause I was able to get it to run for brief periods (poorly). Towed it home with my old farmall M tractor and let it set for 3 hours while we went out to eat. When I came home, it started fine. Pulled the plate over the in-tank pump today and tried to listen to hear the fuel pump both at the tank and through the filler neck. I cannot tell if the pre-pump is running or not. Pulled the fuse, still cannot hear any difference either at the filler neck or in the main pump. Looked at the pre-pump hose in the tank and it looks fine (not like the big hole I found in the one on my 240). Does this sound like the pre-pump is bad? How do I test it? How do I get it out? (I was only able to pull it about 6 inches out of the tank). Will these cars vapor lock? Thanks for the help.
