safe to remove cat? 700

My 15 year old factory exhaust is starting to fail on me. The cat I believe is done with. There is stuff rattling around inside it and I think its restricting exhaust flow. I can't afford a new cat right now.. so my question is would it be ok to remove the cat and clamp a piece of exhaust pipe in its place until I can afford a new exhaust system? Does all the cat do on these cars is emissions reduction right? Wouldn't hurt anything to remove it? There are no emissions tests in my state.
