Overheating in New Volvos 2002

just purchased a 2002 v40 with 80 000 miles. only problem is
overheating. never hits the red line, but perilously close when
driving in traffic, the air conditioning is on and the temperature is
high. the engine fans makes a tremendous amount of noise, seem to be
straining to keep up with the heat. also, the internal digital gauge
reads 104 degrees plus. as soon as the needle is two ticks below
red, i turn on the heat, open the windows and boil. the internal
gauge plummets and the needle falls. the dealer can find nothing
wrong at all.
same situation, buddy greg bought a 2000 S80 T6, 72 000 miles. He is
having hte exact same problem. he skipped the dealer, instead went
to the ship here in town and they coudl find nothign wrong. Help!!!
thanks much for any help.
