SURGE on acceleration 200 1984

I have a 1984 240 wagon with a 2.3 liter engine. When the car has been driven over 30 miles it will surge on acceleration. It really is noticable on hot days. I have changed the fuel filter but that had no efect. The engine never sputters, coughs or dies it is just like you are taking your foot off the accelerator and putting it back on. (It is making the carpool guys very nervous.) It seems to do fine on cool days, could it be tied to overheating? Could it be the in-tank fuel pump or the pressure regulator? It shouldn't be anything major, this car only has 270,000 miles on it.

Sincerely stumped.
