Engine Impluse Sensor 200 1990

I tried today to remove the engine impulse sensor. It quickly started to crack and come apart in pieces. There is still about half of the sensor exposed. What if that breaks off? Can I just remove the metal part and push down the plastic and hope the flywheel will crush the already breaking plastic? Would that damage the engine?
