wiring harness shot? 200 1986

yesterday I had a cold start problem, nothing more. after posting my problem Fitz suggested I look at various things including the coolant temp.sensor. the wire leading to it has lost it's insulation. well I jiglled the harness and now the starter solinoid engages the moving flywheel at will. [not good]. I'm thinking the ignition switch feed to the starter solinoid is picking up a hot wire in the harness because the wire insulation is broke down. there is a plug at the firewall with 4 wires to the plug and 4 wires leaving toward the instrument panel. the 4 going to the plug are all corroded [I suspect there coming from the coolant sensor, knock sensor, starter and I don't know? has anybody experienced this type of problem? my son leaves for college on sat., replace the entire engine harness or just the 4 wires that are brittle?
