gear shift problems 200 1991

Help! I have a 1991 240 SE wagon, which I love, even though she has some issues. It's an automatic and lately the gearshifter doesn't want to lock into the park position. If I jam it hard, it will stay in park although it isn't locked in. Sometimes it will click into the park position as it should, but usually it seems to want to stop at reverse and click into that position rather than staying all the way up in park. I can't tell why sometimes it will and sometimes it won't lock into the park position. Is this bad for the transmission if it isn't fully in the park position? What can I do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
