A/C Dying?

I have a '92 740 turbo wagon. Can anyone tell me if there are signs I should be looking for that tell me my A/C might be on the fritz? I had the A/C serviced two years ago which included a freeon boost and everything has been fine. I have noticed during the last few hot days that I have tiny amount of smoke coming up from under the car when I come to spot right under the right front wheel (isn't this where the A/C drips when the engine is turned off). Of course, the smoke could be something else entirely (the temp gauge reads normal). Anyway, I thought I would ask what I should be looking for before my A/C dies. Also, how long does a Volvo system of this type usually last--I have to think I am pushing the limit especially in the hot/humid midwest climate I live in. I would be curious to hear your thoughts.
