ignition timing (really elementary questions)

I am trying to time the ignition on my 1988 740 turbo. My first question involves interpreting the marks. The timing mark now fluctuates between the 0 and the first mark to the right of the zero. Is this 5 after top dead center? Is the 2 mark to the left of zero 2 degrees before top dead center or 20 degrees? The sticker on the car says it should be 12 degrees before top dead center. Thanks again.
