ignition timing (really elementary questions)

Look closely at the timing marks on the belt cover. The Bentley manual shows the 0 on the right (Driver side), marks at 10degrees (middle), and 20 to the left. Inbetween the number marks there are smaller ticks at 5 degree intervals. I think the 10 degree mark is the easiest to identify. The 10 sits atop of the mark.

When timing, the crank pulley should be positioned between the 10 degree mark and the tic to the left. It is hard to set it exactly, The angle you view from can make the difference of a few degrees.
