Dash Lights on 1988 Volvo 244GL don't work 200

Daughter informed me the other day that she noticed the dash lights don't work. I have checked the fuse and it seems okay - haven't really done anything else yet. Any suggestions before I start tearing things apart?

Also, the brake lights work but are pretty dim (according to my wife). Will a good cleaning help these?

Many thanks - Ted in Albuquerque

PS - Just converted the a/c from R12 to R134. With an ambient temperature over 90 degrees the vent temp was around 55 - I don't think thats too bad.
