what color wire to hook up to tach? 200 1990

Hi,

I was under the impression that on a '90 240 the tach should be hooked up to a gray wire that should be loose behind the dash. My car had such a gray wire (or grayish, anyway; could be dirty white or yellow), complete with unused splice connector at the end, but the tach shows no life. The gray wire in question seems to come from somewhere near the center (i.e., in front of radio) of the firewall, and is separate from the other wiring harnesses. Is this the right wire?

Thanks,

-Lujo
