Exhaust manifold temp tests. 200 1988

Hi to All -

My 1988 244 GL has had a sort of "hiccough" for a year or two. I have done a lot, including new plugs, rotor, cap, ign. wires, clean TB, new hole-free air hose, super-clean PCV system, spray carb cleaner around intake manifold rails, etc. Engine does not pass Houston dynamometer smog test. High everything.

Read recently a post suggesting a test for a misfiring cylinder. Start engne from cold, run a minute or so - max. Then feel each exhaust manifold rail, and the coolest one will the the bad one. Makes sense to me.

Tried it on the 1988 today. Result: Rails #1 - 3 are very warm, but touchable. #4 is to hot to touch but for a fraction of a second.

So here's the question: Could that be the result of #4 running too lean for some reason? Bum manifold gasket, bum injector?

Any ideas and insights will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Bob
