S90 transmission problem: how serious? S90-V90 1998

I'm back. My S90 had a DTC 311 and the speed sensor was replaced. No more engine and up-arrow lights. I did drive the car for over 2 weeks before the sensor was replaced. Now, the 1st and/or 2nd gears seem harsher and at time disengaged totally causing no car movement, just howling high RPM sound, especially when the engine is hot. When cold, car seems to run normal. Is this the worst? Could it be that my driving under the bad sensor influence caused the transmission to go bad? Would appreciate any comments, advice. Thanks.
Mike
