I have been losing more oil than usual (1/2 quart over 1000 mile trip), with at least some of it going through the distributor seals. I changed the 2 dist. O-rings this weekend, and have a couple post-op questions.
1. It looks to me like I need to change the shaft seal:

I have the seal, but was unable to remove the pin holding the drive dog to the shaft. Anybody every get the pin out without using a vise? (either to press the pin out, or hold the distributor while driving the pin with a punch) I haven't got one, and if my 'shop' takes over much more of my apartment, my girlfriend is gonna kill me...
2. I noticed there were a couple blobs of silicone sealant-type stuff on the back of the head, under the distributor - right at the "shoulders" of the valve cover:

Should that sealant be there? Some came off on the distributor plate, which I cleaned off, but I left those blobs on there when I reinstalled the dist.
Overall, the job was pretty easy, with sparkling results:

Many thanks to the FAQ contributors, with a special nod to John Sargent's excellent photos.
