91 740 no start, just drove not FP relay, thing engine is going backwards 700 1991

Hey board,
Ironic, I went to a pick and pull to get my mom's 240 a light socket and when I returned to my car I could not start it. Well it started, idled and when I gave it some gas it dropped sputtered and died. After that it just cranked and cranked. The FP relay is good, checked, it is getting fuel too. The thing is, when I let off the started it "sputters" for a breif second, the air box then follows with a loud pop or umph. Further to my research the intake was filled with smoke it seems, smells very very rich. Now I pulled the timing cover and the belt is tight and not snapped. The car was running 110% when I pulled in. I am very stumped, bout to go back hopefully someone has a few ideas. In the end if she still does not work I will tow her bout 25 miles away to my guru. It is weird, when I do let off the starter it seems like engine backfires if you will and reverses direction!!! ??? :( :(
Thanks,
steve
