Tach hook-up 140-160

My '74 144 has the Volvo factory tach in the center of the instrument cluster. I noticed the wire going from the tach to the coil has a couple of feet of excess wound up in a spool under the dash. Can I cut this wire to length and thus more neatly route it under the dash, or does it for some strange reason need to stay in a fixed length. Just don't want to do anything stupid...
