240 auto tranny leak

I've just noticed a leak from the transmission of my '87 240dl wagon. I've searched the archives to no avail. I've not had time to actually crawl under the car, so I'm asking a very general question:What typically leaks on these machines? Is it something a backyard mechanic with average skills can handle? Thanks to all the wizards in Brickland for your help.
