Ball Joint Stud Nut w/ or w/o washer?? 200 1988

I'm in the middle of a front suspension do over, bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints. When I removed the ball joints, I found a washer under the stud retaining nut on the right side. No washer on the left side. The washer I found on the right side has been squashed pretty good. Of course the new ball joints came with bounting bolts and stud retaining nuts, but no washers.

Should the ball joint studs be connected to the stut mounting plates with washers or just the included retaining nuts?
