Continuing from my post on the 21st... '94 945T 110k miles
Just finished changing my fuel filter, the old one says Volvo on the side although I can't be sure if it's the original. Having the 22mm and 27mm open ended wrenches to counterhold the filter made it a MUCH easier job. Worth the investment in my opinion.
Info from my previous post:
* High pitched whining coming from under the car, still there after new filter installed.
* Noise is heard when key is in key position II (KPII), it squeels when it primes the pumps (no ignition yet) noise goes away once "prime" is done, and also noisy when the car is running (idle + off idle).
Some added info/observations:
1) Removed main pump fuse, no noise during KPII pump "prime".
2) In-tank pump has a normal, healthy, whirring sound.
3) Fuel level does not affect noise.
4) Car drives normally, no hesitations while in motion or while waiting for a stop light.
5) Interesting point...while in Park or Neutral the idle will rev up and down a bit. Rhythmic cycling between 700 to 900, turbo guage also bouncing in tune with RPM guage. Car idles *NORMALLY* while in Reverse or Drive, only sign that a problem exists is the noise from under the car.
6) Have not checked FPR return line yet. No visible black smoke, exhaust smells normal.
Most of the information/observations that I have noted points to a dying main fuel pump, I don't plan on ordering one until I check the FPR. The slightly bouncy idle in Park or Neutral is baffling. I understand there is no transmission load on the engine at these times but can anyone explain to me why the idle "bounce" happens? In other words, if the fuel pump were pulsing why would it only show while in Park or Neutral? Why wouldn't it do so while in gear?
Any other advice or thoughts?
Thanks again to everyone who responded to my last post. Sorry for the long post.
