'71 B20E tuning 140-160

George,
I also have a 71 142E like Joel and hear the infamous ping often. I have been running cheap fuel and not worrying about it. I have backed off the ignition timing and am now electronic ignition via Perlux, which is a miracle in itself. I have not checked the valve lift as you have suggested, but will probably do so the next time the cover is off. Fortunately, I seldom have it off, because these things run quite well. The car is very driveable and fun.

On the topic:
I must agree that toluene attacks most elastomers, including butyl, viton and other seals. It is bad stuff, but how many of those seals and gaskets come into contact with fuel? I have new fuel lines from the tank to the rail and cannot think of anywhere that would matter. Perhaps you can enlighten me with a location for a seal I have missed that might be damaged by small doses of toluene?

I suppose that I am asking myself(and our elite team of D-Jet B20E guys):

"What would do more damage, small doses of toluene or 87 octane on 10.5:1 compression?"

Also, this one is for you Joel:
What sort of hassel is mixing your own toluene in fuel? Hell, since I moved to Mass. toluene is probably illegal here. The list of illegal items also includes certain types of floor lamps(halogen), common fireworks, shotguns, and other stuff I use. Sorry, I am venting since I just moved from Arkansas to Mass. 4 weeks ago......
