will gutting my cat cause harm to my engine?

Reducing backpressure (with measures like larger cat-back exhausts, etc.) on a turbo engine is supposed to be good for it. Less so on a n/a ones, at least to the extent to which you can reduce it for the turbo model.

My '84 B23F non-turbo had its cat gutted by its previous owner. the engine has run fine since I brought it home from the junkyard.

It does look to run a bit rich, though, if the dirty tailpipe is any indication. But the A/F mix screw on the AMM was also "adjusted", so, who knows?
