how often do you check your valve gaps? 200

my 245 has 298k mi on it. I have put on 50k mi on it during the 5 years I've had it. The bently bible says to check the valve clearances every 30k. The car runs good, the idle is a little rougher than when I first got it but it still idles fairly well. When I asked the mechanic I use if it should be checked, he said they dont do it unless there is something wrong that they suspect requires them to remove the valve cover. is this is a big job - taking off the valve cover to check the valves? the other mechanics I've taken it to did not recommend it either. Just wondering if I should worry about it. Thanks in advance.
