Expansion Valve replacement really necessary? 200 1988

I'm in the middle of replacing my AC compressor and recharging my system with R-12. I've also replaced the reciever/drier. I did all that yesterday with intentions of replacing the expansion valve today. I got under the dash today, pulled off most of the clay-like gunk to expose the valve, and I am now wondering.

The little coil thingee (filled with freon?) disappears into the chamber with the evaporator. I cannot see it nor feel it. I had just read that the placement of this widget is pretty important. Not wanting to screw this up, I put all the gunk back in place, reinstalled the trim bits, and came up to the computer.

So what is the general concensus: is the replacement of this valve really necessary?

Thanks,

-Chris
